I think about this a lot because it’s one of the top questions I get asked—and to be honest for the longest time I had no idea the answer. Now that I am fully committed to the Chocolate Plant Protein (I love that stuff, probably too much) I like to answer this question because knowing the answer can help you make the best protein decision for you, your lifestyle, and your goals. So, the question is what exactly is the difference between whey protein and plant protein?

First, let’s make sure we know what protein is and why it’s essential. Protein is a macronutrient that is found to be crucial for building muscle mass. If you want to get really into it, protein is chemically composed of amino acids and these amino acids build protein, which then turns around and builds up muscle. Our bodies don’t naturally produce protein—making it essential that we get it from our diet. Phew, I’m glad we’ve got scientific stuff out of the way!

So what is plant-based protein?
It all comes down to where the protein is coming from and if you haven’t already guessed from the name, plant protein comes from plants! The solution here is to combine your plant-based protein sources so that you can mix and match to get all the amino acids necessary. This may seem very time consuming and require more thought than you want to put in.
