Many of us participate in the ritual of spring cleaning. The garage gets cleaned, windows and screens are scrubbed, and the whole house gets a thorough cleansing. But how many of you remember to ‘spring clean’ your body by supporting natural cleansing and detoxification efforts?

Regular colon cleansing is a powerful way to improve your health. It facilitates the removal of toxins and impacted fecal matter that can make your cells operate sluggishly. Removal of this debris improves the body’s detoxification processes, optimizes digestive health, improves energy levels, and enhances overall well-being.

Waste products left over from food digestion are sent to the colon for excretion. The colon is also home to billions of flora (bacteria). This smorgasbord of unused food and flora in the colon increases mucus production and fermentation that may result in the reabsorption of toxins from the colon. If you don’t have at least one bowel movement daily, it is probably a sign that you need to cleanse your colon.

So, how do you cleanse the colon? One of the simplest ways is through a senna tea. Teas with senna leaf, fibers like orange peel, and buckthorn fang bark help to evacuate your bowels of toxins and waste. These ingredients also support overall digestion to improve nutrient absorption.

Senna has a long history of use in ancient healing systems to alleviate sluggish bowels. The main constituents of senna leaves are sennosides. Through a series of enzymatic and interactions with flora in the intestines, these sennosides increase the frequency and volume of feces evacuated from the bowel.

Derived from the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), orange peel extract provides fiber, which helps speed the transit of foods through the digestive tract. In addition, it is rich in the bioflavonoid hesperidin, which activates an enzyme called AMPK. Hesperidin’s activation of AMPK helps shed abdominal fat.

Buckthorn fang bark (Rhamnus frangula) has been used in traditional medicine systems to alleviate bloating and stimulate bowel activity. It contains anthraquinones that mildly stimulates the colon and its glycoside derivatives (combined with sugars) stimulate the nerves of the colon to trigger a bowel movement.

Tea that combines all three ingredients effectively clears the colon of toxins, waste, and mucous. Your bowels become more regular and the resulting health benefits are realized. Ultimately, this leads to improved overall wellness.

A few tips:

  • The best time to take a tea like this is immediately before bed. Be prepared for a moving experience in the morning.
  • Steep the tea for about 5 minutes during your first use. As your body becomes familiarized with the cleansing tea, you can increase this steeping time as needed or even consider two tea bags.
  • Don’t use microwaved water. Microwaving can change the molecular structure of water and reduce the efficacy of herbs that it comes in contact with. Traditionally boiled water is much better.
  • Cleanse twice per week until you have regular bowel movements without the tea. Twice weekly cleansing for one month is a great way to kick start your bowels. After the initial period, once or twice monthly is all you should need to stay regular.

So, as you start to clean that garage, make sure you give your colon the same attention. Just maybe wait to use the tea until the evening and after you’ve cleaned the garage. Otherwise your house spring cleaning may be interrupted with some serious colon cleansing. Your colon will function better and so will your whole body as you remove waste products.
